Class Offerings
Marimba Boise offers a variety of classes for young people, adults and families. We are also able to create custom sessions or one-time workshops for groups who want to play together. Don't see what you're looking for? Please contact us!
Below are the offerings for Spring, 2024. Enrollment must reach a minimum of 5 students per class for the class to go, and will remain open on a space-available basis through the second full week of class.
Beginning Kids
Here's where young people get to channel their energy into making beautiful music by whacking things - what could be more satisfying? Open to kids 8-16 years old.
Novice Adults/Teens
For people ages 17 and up with less than a year prior experience and/or those who prefer learning at a relaxed pace. We'll cover the basics of Zimbabwean-style marimba and get right into playing a fun and upbeat song together.
Wednesdays, 7:30-8:30 pm; October 2 - November 20 (eight weeks)
New Class! Continuing Adults/Teens
This class, populated mostly by students who have been playing a year or more, moves to a longer duration of 1 1/2 hours to allow building and retention of repertoire. While still progressing at a relaxed pace, students in this group will aim to circle back on songs they've learned previously while learning new material. New members, while welcome, will be asked to meet with the instructor outside of class to get familiar with existing repertoire.
Wednesdays, 5:45-7:15 pm
October 2 - November 20 (eight weeks)
Homeschool Kids
Open to kids 8-16 years old (parents welcome too!) and scheduled weekdays according to participant needs. Please contact Heather if you would like to set up a custom session for your homeschool circle.
Family Class
Beginning-level class open to kids 7+ years old and their favorite grown-ups. Discover the joy of making music with someone you love, regardless of past experience. Cost is per participant.
Systa Styx Performing Group
This special group's members have all been playing together for several years and have a solid repertoire of songs that are performance-ready. They have a great time together and love expanding their horizons with new songs. They are incidentally all retired, so can take advantage of the ability to practice during morning hours. Anyone wishing to join them should have at least a little playing experience, desire to continue playing long-term, and be willing to meet with the instructor outside of class time to learn established repertoire. Membership contingent on instructor recommendation and group agreement.
Tuesdays, 9:30-11:00 am
October 1 - November 19, (eight weeks)
Marimba Meltdown Performing Group
This is Marimba Boise's most advanced group. Members typically come with a solid foundation in Zimbabwean marimba OR other musical genres. The group maintains a fairly extensive repertoire of rhythmically challenging songs, practices year-round to the extent individual schedules allow, and loves to perform! We are always looking for new players, but membership is contingent on consistent attendance, longer-term commitment, and willingness to spend time outside of class to learn existing repertoire. Please contact Heather if you are interested in joining this group!
This class meets for 2 hours weekly throughout most of the year. The current day/time is Thursdays at 5:30 - 7:30 pm.
Continuing Kids
For kids with 2+ years' previous playing experience or equivalent. Effort is made to group kids with similar abilities and give them more challenging material, plus performance opportunities out in the community.
